Carrowbehy company solving trough-transport
A CARROWBEHY-BASED engineering firm has developed a new device that can be retrofitted onto existing feeding troughs, making them easy to transport. Every Irish farmer will be all too familiar with the back-breaking inconvenience involved in moving feeding troughs around the farms to prevent excessive poaching of the surrounding ground. Moving conventional troughs usually calls for additional resources, in the form of a second person, or the use of a trailer or the front-loader of a tractor. Most farmers will be reluctant to risk further damage to their land by bringing in heavy machinery and, on most farms, finding an extra pair of hands when you need them isn’t always possible. Now Tully Forge, based at Tully, Carrowbehy, Castle-rea, has developed Trough-port. The device centres around a 16” wheelbarrow wheel, which can be clamped securely on to one end of the trough and is controlled by a centreplate. This innovative centreplate is crucial to the operation of the device. Troughport is being manufactured by Tully Forge, a Roscommon-based engineering firm and will be launched this week at the Cavan Farm Machinery Show. When the operator lifts the feeding trough, the wheelbarrow wheel will automatically lower and lock into position. The farmer can then move the trough around in the manner of a conventional wheel-barrow. To release the wheel, the farmer simply lifts the trough once again and the wheel automatically disengages, allowing the trough to be lowered to the ground to stand on its own feet once again. This is a simple and effective way of moving the trough, whilst also ensuring that it is fully stable whilst in use for feeding. The photographs below illustrate Troughport in action.
With ever-increasing emphasis on farm safety, Troughport eliminates the main risks associated with the movement of troughs on Irish farms. Re-distributing the weight of the trough onto the wheel protects the farmer from potential back injury. This innovative product was designed by David Connolly and Robert Lilly, inventor of Bale Buster. Patent for Troughport is currently pending. Further details, including a short video of the product in operation, can be viewed at www.tullyforge.ie. Orders may also be placed directly by contacting Gerard on (086) 4014796.
