A family affair to represent Roscommon at Ploughing Championships
By Maresa Fagan
It will be something of a family affair in the Roscommon camp at this year’s National Ploughing Championships, which take place near Tullow, Co Carlow, next week. Next Monday 27th September, the Roscommon Ploughing Team, which is represented by a father and son, father and daughter and two brothers, will head for Carlow to represent the county in a variety of ploughing classes.
The National Ploughing Championships return to County Carlow on September 28th -30th for the eighth time in its 73 year history. Up to 130,000 people are expected to attend the event, which will see over 300 ploughmen and women pit their ploughing skills against each other in 17 national and two international competitions.
On Tuesday 28th September members of the Roscommon team will plough in three classes, the first being the three furrow match plough where Roscommon will be represented by Paddy Beirne. Paddy is indeed the best known ploughman having previously won the only All Ireland Title to come to Roscommon to date and will no doubt do his utmost to repeat that feat. In the under 28 class Roscommon will be represented by Michael Naughton. Last year Michael won the cup for the best under 21 competition from Connaught so big things will be expected from him this year. Finally on Tuesday Roscommon will be represented in the under 21 class by Enda Naughton, Michael’s younger brother. This is Enda’s first time to represent his county and judging by the way he ahas been ploughing at local level he can be expected o do very well.
On Wednesday 28th Roscommon will be represented in the junior and the Farmerette classes and in loy digging. Noel Moran and Tim Fox will represent the county at junior level. Noel is one of the newer members of the team and has ploughed very well at local ploughing matches this year and can be expected to do very well. Tim Fox has been a member of the team for a few years and has come into prizes on a few occasions in recent years so who knows what might happen this year. In he Farmerette class Ciara Moran will fly the flag for county Roscommon. Ciara has represented the county in the past and has never let the showdown. In the loy digging event, well-known character Gerry Jago will represent the county and will be well worth going to see.
On Thursday 29th the team will take part in the three furrow standard class and the two furrow vintage mounted class. Stephen Beirne will take part in the three furrow class, and being a son of Paddy’s he can be expected to do very well. Taking part in the two furrow vintage mounted class, Christy Neilan, the father of the County Roscommon Ploughing organisation and a great competitor will do well as always.
