Top Hotels
It is great to see that three hotels in the general Boyle area are among those who have been nominated for the Wedding Venue of the Year award. Cromleach Lodge.
The Landmark Hotel and Kilronan Castle now go forward to the judging panel for consideration, with the winner being announced at a ceremony in Dublin on February 15th.
While it is encouraging to have such high quality hotels within a half hour drive of the town, the fact still remains that we do not have a four star hotel in Boyle capable of holding large scale weddings and conferences.
That An Board Pleanala has still not given a decision on plans for such a hotel at Mocmoyne is nothing short of a scandal as is the deafening silence on the matter by some in this town.
People of the Year
Nomination forms have been distributed for the 17th annual Boyle Person of the Year Awards, which will be held on Friday, February 5th next. The awards, which are organised by Boyle Town Council, honor groups and individuals for their work within the community.
Head Shops
While shops and businesses close in our town as a result of the downturn, one wonders what would be the view of the public if a “Head Shop” opened in our midst. A Head Shop is a retail outlet that “specialises in legal highs”.
The shops operate within the law and the most recent opening was in Castle Street in Roscommon town with others planned for around the country.
The Aftermath
At long, long last the snow and frost has receded for the time being anyway!
We have to remember it is only January 19th and there will be plenty more snow, frost, wind and rain before the spring arrives. Negotiating the potholes is now the new hazard with many roads in a deplorable state.
The county council came in for unfair criticism locally in relation to its dealing with the gritting process, but no one can question the effort of the council employees on the ground who worked tirelessly to make the thoroughfares safe.
Indeed the industrious operative in the blue van was out early Sunday morning blowing stones off paths.
But we have to come to understand in this country (and town) that sometimes we have to do things for ourselves and not wait for others.
Cleaning the grit off the footpaths is a prime example.
Some whinged that it took the council so long to put grit on the paths. They did, and now that the thaw has come the same whingers are again wondering when the council will sweep the grit off!
Shopkeepers, business owners and individuals need to get out and do it themselves, and not be waiting for the cash stretched local authority to do so, and this is exactly what some did on Friday and over the weekend. Well done.
One Way System
Whether you are in favour of the one way system or not, many will agree that the signage indicating its existence needs updating.
How many times have you met cars coming in Shop Street after negotiating the iron maze at the bottom of Marian Road?
(Indeed someone nearly demolished part of the maze recently).
Another black spot is the exit from the Royal Hotel car park.
If you are a stranger to the town there is only a small sign high up on a pole to inform you that you can not turn right and right they do turn on their way to what will be a serious collision at Creighton’s corner.
Second Gate
One of the many historical and beautiful buildings that we have in Boyle is what is referred to locally as “The Second Gate of Rockingham.”
Unfortunately it has fallen into disrepair, which is a shame, as its location, on one of the main approaches to the park, can make a strong statement about what lies ahead. Indeed the “second gate” was occupied up until the early eighties by an old Boyle family -the Carroll brothers Mickey and Pakie.
Before the tourist season commences wouldn’t it be a worthwhile project if some group got permission to at least power hose the building and repaint it?
It shouldn’t cost that much and would add greatly to the park and area.
First of the Season
The first outing of the counties senior GAA team in Sligo last Sunday didn’t attract that large of a crowd.
Boyle man Sean Purcell captained the team on the day with David Casey in attendance, but not listed.
Next Sunday sees the team in action in Dangan against NUIG.
