Little bit of history comes to Roscommon
William B. Joyce was a dentist who lived in Roscommon in the 1930s.
He was a keen golfer and member of Roscommon Golf Club.
Mr Joyce won the club’s captains’ prize in 1936. He was rewarded with an engraved silver cup called the Captain’s Cup.
When Mr Joyce died, the cup came into the possession of his niece Sheila Joyce who currently lives in Wexford.
She was keen to see the cup return to Roscommon Golf Club and, at the same time, honour her uncle in a practical way.
As a result, she very kindly donated the cup to Roscommon Golf Club recently with a request that it be presented for an annual tournament at the club.
Roscommon Golf Club is delighted to receive this beautiful piece of silverware, which is a memento from the past.
Through the kind efforts of Aidan Farrell of MJ Farrell Jewellers, the cup has been restored to its former glory and will be played for each year as the Minor Scratch Cup for golfers of handicap range 19-26.
The cup represents an important link with different times.
After almost 75 years, it reflects the longevity of Roscommon Golf Club which continues to serve the local community as a vital amenity in the town.
The club would like to sincerely thank Ms Sheila Joyce for her generous gesture and also the offices of Esmay Smyth, archivist in Roscommon County Library, whose offices facilitated the donation.
In addition the support and expertise of MJ Farrell Jewellers is greatly appreciated in the restoration of the cup.
