Frontline Services
In recent weeks thousands of protesters have taken to the streets, many of them suffering from some form of disability, in protest over cuts to vital services.
Groups representing people with disabilities and people with disabilities themselves have warned that the system simply cannot take any further reduction in frontline services.
There has been some concern over salaries paid to top management among some service providers and concern too over why providers cannot find ways to reduce spending without affecting people adversely.
Last week the Minister for State with responsibility for disability, John Moloney, claimed that it was never the Government’s intention to cut respite services.
Meanwhile the Health Service Executive said it had “advised” that no frontline services should be cut. So confusion still reigns.
While the confusion continues people with genuine care needs are continuing to worry how they will cope with any more cuts.
Some organisations have claimed that reducing their expenditure would force them to shut down respite units.
However, Government and the HSE claim that some of the organisations could find the savings in administration costs, without cutting services.
People have a right to know how exactly savings are going to be made. Vulnerable people deserve the support of the State, not vague promises.
