An amazing display

Roscommon have risen from the depths of depression to defy the pundits and grasp a long awaited Connacht final title.

What happened in Castlebar on Sunday was not expected, a one point win for the men from Roscommon, which saw the county launch a frenzy of celebrations.

Roscommon, with five of their All-Ireland minor team of 2006, took Sligo by surprise.

For the Sligo fans this wasn’t how it was supposed to be. Roscommon were not supposed to win.

Roscommon manager Fergal O’Donnell had obviously instilled a great sense of pride and spirit in the team ahead of the game and away from the media spotlight.

In the backroom this was how they had it planned, but their secret was safe.

Right from the start Sligo were doing all the chasing and for Roscommon the end they had dreamed off finally came to pass.

There are some who may begrudge Roscommon this victory, but for a county starved of success at this level for so long, Sunday’s display showed how much can change in a dramatic 75 minutes.

In every corner of the world Roscommon people are celebrating.

The All-Ireland quarter-finals are awaited with a fervour not witnessed for decades.

There was much talk on Sunday about the legacy of the late Dermot Earley. How proud he would have been to see the cup being lifted high in McHale Park.

To Fergal O’Donnell and his entire team of players and mentors we say well done.

You have all done your county proud. Roll on Croke Park.
