Damage to rural roads reaching point of ‘near disintegration’
THE CHAIRPERSON of the ICMSA’s Rural Development Committee, Mr John O’ Donnell, has stated that the damage to the local roads network has reached the point of near disintegration and that a major road improvement initiative must be implemented without delay.
As an interim measure, ICMSA has written to Minister Dempsey outlining proposals for the establishment of a pilot scheme to allow local contractors tender for the repair of local secondary roads. Mr O’Donnell believes this initiative would help to ensure the timely repair of these roads while allowing Local Authorities concentrate on main road maintenance.
He welcomed as a “step in the right direction” the recent announcement by the Minister for Transport that the most urgently required road repairs resulting from the extensive damage caused by this winter’s severe weather events would be the prime target of the €411m investment programme for the regional and local roads network for 2010, but the Rural Development Chairman said that more must be done.
The farm organisation spokesman concluded by stating that the Government should acknowledge that this announcement did not represent any new allocation of funds towards the repair of the damage caused by this year’s freakishly severe weather and the Government must not pretend that this is additional funding.
The Minister must immediately address this issue and instigate a major road improvement initiative with significant additional funding.
