Scandalous decision

The decision to axe day care services at the Plunkett Home in Boyle is one that the people of Roscommon should reject out of hand.

Last August services at the facility were reduced from five days to three. Now the service will be cut all together from next Monday.

Yes we are facing difficult times, but cutting services to elderly vulnerable people is reprehensible. Hitting services that are a lifeline for those who avail of them on a weekly basis is again targeting the most vulnerable in our communities.

In addition to being a social outlet for many, it has allowed users of the service to go to the nursing home for lunch, for physiotherapy, or as a social outlet.

For people like 72-year-old John Rush from Termon Road in Boyle the news has been devastating.

“Elderly people will die, it’s as simple as that,” John told the Roscommon Herald.

“This news is just terrible, we can’t allow it to happen. Elderly men and women were crying today when we were told that from next week there would be no service. This was a lifeline for us. But we obviously don’t matter. When it comes to budget cuts we are easy prey. The elderly have no voice.”

The people of Boyle and North Roscommon must now stand up and fight for these vulnerable people. This is a scandalous move.

Elderly people cannot be treated as figures and numbers.
