Growing public anger

The threats to services at Roscommon County Hospital are back in the public domain.

Last Thursday night members of the community voiced their concerns and anger over plans to downgrade services at the hospital.

During what was a very emotionally and politically charged meeting, there were several calls on Minister Michael Finneran to step into the fray and make his position clear on the hospital.

As far as Minister Finneran is concerned the “political decision” that he secured in 2006 to retain services at Roscommon and the need to use the services at the hospital or risk losing them, stands.

He says that he is not aware of any changes being made to services at the hospital and to date has received no indication from the Health Service Executive, or from government, of any proposed changes to the services provided at hospital.

However, the people are not convinced and once again the hospital issue has become another political football. Roscommon Hospital Action Committee warned at the public meeting last week that people would die on the roads unless full 24-hour accident and emergency and existing services at Roscommon County Hospital were retained.

The fear now is that the HSE wants to see services being delivered through one central unit, University College Hospital in Galway, while Roscommon, Portiuncula and Merlin Park hospitals would act as satellite or campus hospitals.

While the people of Roscommon worry, the HSE continues to play games and the politicians level the blame at each other.

Yet again it appears that the people of Roscommon will have to make their voices heard and shout STOP. The fight for Roscommon County Hospital has gone on for years. Again we will have to say, “enough is enough”.
