County Tourism in jeopardy
Well done to a brave Roscommon team on winning the Connacht final in Castlebar yesterday.
The glory days are back again and the past seems to have been written to history!
Whether one was at the match or watching it on TV, there was a great sense of Roscommon pride with the win and on top of the pride there was genuine joy and happiness for Fergal O Donnell and his men who always said they would try their best and that they did.
Let’s keep the flags flying now for the next outing.
ARTS FESTIVAL
The much acclaimed Boyle Arts Festival officially kicks off this Wednesday with The Coronas and support appearing in St. Joseph’s Hall.
Events run through until Saturday, July 31st in addition to the daily exhibits.
While some of the events may not be everyone’s cup of tea, they are none the less appealing to many and the highly regarded festival attracts a large crowd to the town over the eleven days.
The local art exhibition in the Church of Ireland school is always a big attraction as are the readings and workshops.
There really is something for everyone at the festival and it is up to us all to go out and support the events in large numbers.
PARKING PROBLEMS
The fact that there is adequate parking in Boyle has been highlighted many times in the Boyle(ing) Pot as has the fact that traffic jams in the town can be attributed to two areas where illegal parking is the root cause of the backups on the corner of the Bank of Ireland and where the Main Street narrows outside Boyle Country Meats.
If cars persist in parking illegally in both of these areas, on the double yellow lines that are in place, then trucks in particular will not be able to get through resulting in the backup if they don’t park here or if they start getting tickets, then traffic will move freely.
ST SWITHIN’S
Last Thursday was St Swithin’s Day when tradition says that whatever the weather is like on that day, it will continue the same for forty days and forty nights.
While the morning started off promising after the deluge of Wednesday evening, Thursday lunchtime took a turn for the worst and the rain made an appearance again.
Let’s hope St Swithin can be proven wrong and that the good weather will return!
QUEEN OF THE CURLEWS
Congratulations to Lucia Cretaro who was crowned Queen of the Curlews in St. Joseph’s Hall on Saturday night last.
The event was a fundraiser for Boyle Ladies GAA and a great night of fun and laughter was reported from the large crowd who attended.
Everyone agreed, as they do yearly, that the hall is an under utilised resource in the town and one that can be put to great use as displayed by the Ladies GAA Club last weekend.
COOKERY DEMONSTRATION
Don’t forget tonight (Tuesday) there will be a cookery demonstration in the Resource Centre adjacent to St Joseph’s Church at 8 p.m..
All funds raised on the evening will go to Boyle Horse and Pony Racing Association. Your support would be appreciated.
ANNIVERSARY
Many will recall the events of this Saturday two years ago.
On a warm humid evening, with a large crowd in town for the Arts Festival, a camper van lost control and careered down the Crescent hitting cars and vans in its tracks before grinding to a halt outside the Royal Hotel.
In the moments immediately following, there was an eerie silence for approximately five seconds until the screams of a child in one of the hit cars rang out through the air. It was a miracle that no one was seriously hurt or killed in the sequence of events.
While on the subject of dates, last Wednesday’s deluge brought back memories of the infamous flash flood that hit Boyle around this time 14 years ago Sunday, July 28th 1996 to be exact when 84mm of rain fell in one hour.
It is said that events like this occur once every 80 years so it’s consoling to know we will have to wait until 2076 to see its likes again!!
