On the road to Croke Park
The anticipation has been building in the county for the past two weeks.
The draw for Roscommon against Cork might not be what the county was hoping for, but that should not stop Roscommon people in their thousands heading to Croke Park on Sunday to get behind the team.
The roars of the Roscommon fans are needed in Croke Park on Sunday.
Yes Cork is a tough draw, but at this stage of the competition there was never really going to be an easy ticket to the next round.
For the next few days we all have a duty to ensure we adopt the can-do attitude as opposed to the ‘what’s the point in going’ attitude.
On the field on Sunday it will take some skill, determination, hard work and of course luck to pull off a quarter-final win. However, no matter what happens on the day Roscommon are Connacht champions and they have given Roscommon fans everywhere a reason to be proud.
The pundits may have already written Roscommon off, claiming that Roscommon have little chance against a Cork side that will be firmly setting their sights on an All-Ireland semi-final.
Already there are those who say that all Cork really have to do on Sunday is turn up.
Pundits have been wrong before! We must remain optimistic and get the mentality right; that at least will be some of the battle.
The scenes of joy witnessed following Roscommon’s win in Castlebar show how much football does really mean to Roscommon people and how delighted they are to have come this far and see Roscommon get to Croke Park.
For hundreds of young people in the county the Connacht champions have now become their heroes.
These are the footballers of tomorrow and a trip for them to Croke Park shows at least that there can be good days ahead.
With the countdown to Croke Park now on we send our best wishes to the team and management and again encourage Roscommon people everywhere to leave the negativity at home.
