Concern over ‘radical proposals’ for councils
CONCERN OVER the impact of possible further cuts to local authority staff numbers, proposed by the Local Government Efficiency Review Group, has been expressed this week by the Roscommon County Manager.
In a statement to local radio this week, Mr Frank Dawson described the recommendations as “quite radical”.
Under the new proposals up to 20 local authorities could be merged into 10 “joint administrative areas”, which would result in one in three local authority managers losing their jobs and Roscommon and Mayo county councils being merged.
The Local Government Efficiency Review Group claimed the move would result in increased efficiencies in planning; housing and service provision and represent better value for money for the taxpayer.
The review group also recommended a further reduction in the numbers of directors, senior and middle managers, corporate service, planning and roads staff as well as the creation of joint administrative areas between some county councils, including Leitrim and Sligo, Roscommon with Mayo and Longford and Westmeath with just one county manager running each of the new joint authorities.
