Event History

Ian Cooney, Sports Editor, Roscommon Herald

"The Roscommon Herald/SuperValu Sportstar Awards have been in existence since 2002.

From humble beginnings in the White House Hotel, Ballinlough in 2002 when Anthony Cahill of Cahill's SuperValu, Castlerea was the main sponsor, the awards have gone from strength to strength, best emphasised by the arrival of all four SuperValu stores in Roscommon as the awards' main sponsor (Cahill's of Castlerea, Kelly's of Boyle, Fleming's of Roscommon town and Glancy's of Carrick-on-Shannon).

These awards are firmly established as the number one event in the Roscommon sporting calendar. They recognise local talent and gives them an incentive to be honoured in their own county, a feat that all ambitious sportstars crave.

The awards are unique in that they encourage everyone to be the best at his/her particular code. They embrace all sports, an integral part of the Roscommon Herald's philosophy in giving every sport a voice."

“The sports star awards are now in their 6th year of existence and have grown in stature with each passing year. They are now one of the highlights of the sporting and social calendar in the county and to be nominated for an award is an honour in its own right.

SuperValu’s involvement with the Herald in the awards is a prime example of how two Irish owned companies can give something back to their communities and we hope to build on this going forward.”
